Platte County welcomes experienced prosecutor back

Justin Kalwei.jpg

The Platte County Prosecuting Attorney’s Office has welcomed back an experienced prosecutor.  Justin Kalwei, who left the office in 2015 for private practice, returned to the office as a trial team leader on September 11.

Platte County Prosecuting Attorney Eric Zahnd said, “Platte County is very fortunate to regain the high-caliber services of Justin Kalwei.  He is an outstanding advocate for the State of Missouri who has an unwavering commitment to justice and victim rights.”

Kalwei served in the office from 2007 to 2015.  A husband and father of three, Kalwei said his decision to leave the office in 2015 was difficult, but he did so in order to earn more money for his family.

However, when the chance arose to recommit his career to public service, Kalwei seized the opportunity.  Chris Seufert, a longtime assistant prosecutor and trial team leader, recently relocated with his family to Houston, opening a leadership position in the office.

“I am grateful and honored to be able to return to the prosecutor’s office to serve the citizens of Platte County and the State of Missouri,” Kalwei said.  “I was eager to return to an office that consistently pursues justice with the highest standards of professionalism, and I look forward to practicing again in front of Platte County’s judges.”

Kalwei graduated from William Jewell College in 2002 and UMKC Law School in 2006.  He practiced briefly with a law firm before joining Zahnd’s office.

A photo of Kalwei is above.  If you need additional information, please contact our office’s media liaison, Tanya Faherty.

It was referred to state voters by the Legislature. Prop D phases in a 2.5 cents annual motor fuels tax increase over four years.

Housing Policy

At this months Public Policy Committee meeting, Councilmen Scott Wagner and Quinton Lucas provided information regarding Kansas City's proposed housing policy. Kansas City has not had an official housing policy for over a decade. Instead, it's been dictated by HUD's 5 year policy.

Some of the concerns expressed were:

  • The proposed policy should be more defined, specifically consider the impact of the definition of affordable.

  • Affordable is not required if not incentivized and if not a significant public investment in infrastructure. What is a significant investment?

  • Expedited permitting for affordable projects puts other projects at the bottom of an already long process.

  • Housing development costs could increase more. Profit margins for housing development have stayed the same for 20 years, but lot prices have increased by $20,000.

Councilmen Wagner and Lucas indicated that the current proposed housing policy, is just a starting point of conversations. The intent is that the policy will not be a one size fits all.

Platte County EDC welcomes new members

Platte County Parks & Rec - September Events

Recap on the Missouri River Float: SYOTR (See You On The River) next year!!

MISSOURI RIVER FLOAT TRIP Jackie Halloran, Recreation & Marketing Coordinator and Chris Oryshyn, Assistant Director, conduct a safety meeting for approximately 100 paddlers before the float.

Below is Jackie & Kim the only stand up paddlers in one of the largest attended floats in the last 4 years. What a stellar day! Record breaking attendance and excellent feedback from everyone on the river. We can't wait til next year.

~"This is one of my favorite events. I love being on the river and being a part of that energy. I appreciate everyone who attended and making this such a successful event. SYOTR"~ Jackie

Contact Jackie Halloran for information on future events or if you have event ideas: 816-858-3419

A Special Thank you to Dave Mendez, Parks Operations who provided security and unwavering support at Schimmel City in Farley.

This Annual 16 mile Float event was from Schimmel City River Access in Farley to Platte Landing Park in Parkville. A Free event that provided 2 shuttle buses for paddlers back to the starting point. So all folks had to do was float to their car, load up and leave. No worries!! Kansas City Kayak & Canoe, LLC equipped 22 paddlers with kayaks, paddles and PFD's this year.

Thank you to everyone who attended and to Doug, Conservation Agent and Mike from the Sherriff's dept who provided safety boats. Also to Dean & Curtis who assisted in the boats.

Pictured above are Rusty & Amber Coons local Platte County residents in their 27' canoe. MR340 veterans, they are no strangers to the Mighty MO. They brought the youngest participant, their 10 year old son. Thumbs UP!

Saturday, August 11th, 8:00 a.m.
Sunday, August 12th, 8:00 a.m.
At each of these harvest parties, we'll harvest the grapes starting at 8:00 a.m. and finish with a yummy lunch as soon as the grapes are harvested (usually around noon). We have many people who have come to help us year after year, and always look forward to each harvest.  Each person who stays 'til all the grapes are harvested will go home with very own special-edition "Jowler Creek Harvest Cru" wine glass.  Due to the U.S. Department of Agriculture's Fair Labor Standards Act (FLSA), anyone attending the vineyard must be at least 16 years of age.  Sign up here!
