Dust Control
Dust from gravel and dirt roads is a nuisance. Public Works manages a dust control program for residents not serviced by a special road district or an incorporated city, village or town. The program will be for an application of Magnesium Chloride (MgCL2) only. This product consists of a "brine solution" found naturally in various regions of the USA. The product controls dust by attracting moisture from the atmosphere causing dust to "clump" together and does not float in the air.
Platte County WILL NOT guarantee the performance of dust suppressant. Variables such as weather conditions and traffic volume affect the chemical's performance. Dust control is intended to reduce dust – not eliminate it. Some dust control areas have lasted two years and some just a few months.
We will leave the dust control areas alone until they become rough. However, usually in the fall or winter, dust control areas begin to deteriorate and become rough for traffic. If we receive complaints about a dust control area and find it hazardous to traffic, we will blade that portion of the road. This will more than likely cause the dust control to become ineffective. To make the dust control areas last longer, landowners can inform us of small potholes before they become big and hazardous.
Platte County dust control products are applied to aggregate (gravel) roadways when the vehicle traffic account exceeds 100 vehicles per day. These products may also be applied when there is a residence within 50 feet of a roadway.
Department of Public Works provides county clean up twice a year. However, we do not offer weekly trash service..
