Farley Special District - Parkville Special District - Platte City Special District -- Weston Special District - Cities - Villages

Roads in rural (unincorporated) Platte County are held in trust for the public by the county government.  They are built and maintained under the direction of either the Department of Public Works or one of four, Benefit Assessment Special Road Districts.  The special districts maintain the roads and bridges in their geographical areas of the unincorporated county.  The four Special Road Districts are: the Parkville Special Road District, the Platte City Special Road District, the Farley Special Road District, and the Weston Special Road District.  The remainder of the county is under the jurisdiction of the Department of Public Works, County Road #1.  Each of these districts has the authority to levy property taxes and collect revenue.  Each of the individual districts has its own staff and fleet of equipment and is responsible for maintaining the roads and bridges located with their own district as deemed necessary by their elected road commissioners.  The locations of the road districts are available in pdf format:

The special road districts are each governed by a three-member elected board of Commissioners.  Commissioners serve offset three-year terms.  State Statutes grant the board control over their public roads and bridges, the purchase of equipment and the ability to contract work.  The Director of Public Works manages County Road #1 who is governed directly by the County Commission.  Road Districts are named for geographic areas and do not include cities, townships or other geographic areas.
