Mother sentenced for videotaping sex with daughter

A mother who participated in the videotaped sexual abuse of her 16-year-old daughter has been sentenced to 58 years in prison, despite a recommendation from the Missouri Sentencing Advisory Commission that she receive probation. Bobbie Jo Geveshausen, 43, of Riverside, received the sentence May 17 after earlier pleading guilty to five counts of sexual exploitation of a minor and two counts of second degree statutory sodomy.

Platte County Prosecutor Eric Zahnd said, “It is difficult to imagine the depravity of a mother who would willingly engage in the sexual abuse of her own daughter. I can think of no one—other than our state’s Sentencing Advisory Commission—who would recommend probation for such unspeakable crimes.”

Judge Abe Shafer sentenced Geveshausen to a total of 58 years in prison on seven counts, all stemming from videotaped incidents of Geveshausen and her boyfriend, Edward D. Shockey, 35, engaging in sexual acts with Geveshausen’s16-year-old daughter.

The sentences imposed ignored the recommendation of the Missouri Sentencing Advisory Commission, which was created to study sentencing practices in Missouri and develop recommended sentences for every crime. Its recommendations are not binding on judges.

Zahnd said, “The Sentencing Advisory Commission relies on cold numbers and statistics to compute its recommended sentences. But these cases have actual victims who have endured terrible acts of violence committed by very real and evil criminals.”

The case against Geveshausen came to light September 29, 2008, when the girl’s boyfriend went to the Riverside Department of Public Safety to report a sexual assault of his girlfriend. The girl’s boyfriend said Shockey had given him several DVDs which the boyfriend believed contained music videos.

One of the DVDs actually contained videos of Geveshausen and Shockey engaging in multiple sexual acts with the girl. The girl is visibly pregnant in many of the videos.

Shockey was sentenced to 25 years in prison in December 2009 relating to the same incidents.

Zahnd said, “It is outrageous that Missouri’s Sentencing Advisory Commission believes a mother who videotapes the sexual exploitation of her own daughter should receive probation. Any system that recommends anything but substantial prison time for repeated acts of horrendous sexual abuse is fundamentally broken. It is time for these worthless recommended sentences to be abolished.”

The case was investigated by Riverside Department of Public Safety. It was prosecuted by Assistant Prosecutor Chris Seufert.
