Man gets two years in prison for shoplifting 12-pack

A Kansas City man has been sentenced to two years in prison after shoplifting a 12-pack of beer worth $10.79. Carl E. Hundley, 53, was apprehended by a Deputy Chief with the Kansas City Police Department after he stole the merchandise from a Platte County Quik Trip.

Platte County Prosecutor Eric Zahnd said, “Two years might seem like a long prison sentence for a shoplifting case where only $10 worth of beer was taken. But this defendant’s long rap sheet makes prison the only acceptable punishment for his crime.”

Judge Abe Shafer handed down the prison sentence recommended by prosecutors after Hundley pled guilty on December 3 to two counts of felony stealing.

According to Zahnd, on September 15 at approximately 8:30 a.m., Kansas City Police Department Deputy Chief Kevin Masters was at the Quik Trip located at 7133 NW Barry Road. The store manager told Masters that a man who was later identified as Hundley had just stolen a 12-pack of Bud Ice beer.

Masters pulled his patrol car behind Hundley’s van and turned on his lights and siren. Hundley looked back at Masters and drove away.

With the assistance of the Platte County Sheriff’s Department, Masters stopped Hundley’s van and arrested him. A search of the van revealed a 12-pack of Bud Ice Beer and a brand new Craftsman Combo Tool Kit.

Police ultimately learned that Hundley had stolen the tools on September 14 from the Sears Grand located at 7100 NW Prairie View Road.

Court documents indicate Hundley has a lengthy criminal history from eight states. Based on Hundley’s criminal history, Zahnd’s office charged Hundley as a persistent offender to elevate the charges from misdemeanor to felony status.

Zahnd said, “Some may view shoplifting as a petty offense. But by the time a man has amassed a criminal history from eight different states, even a minor offense like stealing $10 worth of merchandise should bring prison time.”

The case was investigated by Kansas City Police Department, with the assistance of the Platte County Sheriff’s Department. It was prosecuted by Joe Vanover.
