Shoe prints lead to burglary conviction

A Kansas City man whose shoe prints led to his conviction for burglary has been sentenced to nine years in prison.  John Weaver, 45, received the sentence on October 29 in Platte County Circuit Court after pleading guilty to first degree burglary. Platte County Prosecutor Eric Zahnd said, “This defendant committed a nighttime burglary in quiet, small town.  He might have gotten away with it, had it not been for an employee who returned to the business after dark and solid police work.”

Weaver was convicted of breaking in to Martens Classic Auto in Tracy on January 10, 2007, shortly after 8:00 p.m.

At approximately 8:25 p.m. an employee returned to the business. He noticed lights on and vehicles inside the shop loaded with wheels, air conditioners, a television, and other items.

Two men then fled from the shop area, one through a plate glass window and the other through a back door.  One of the burglars was armed with a gun.

A showroom poster was knocked over and stepped on during the burglary, leaving distinguishable shoe prints.

While processing the burglary scene, officers with the Tracy Police Department received information regarding a burglary in Leavenworth, Kansas.  The suspect in that case—later identified as Weaver—was caught wearing clothes matching the description given by the witness of the Tracy burglary.

Weaver was taken into custody by Leavenworth Police Department.  His shoes were compared to the footprints on the showroom poster and were the same size and pattern.  Additional analysis by the Missouri State Highway Patrol Crime Laboratory confirmed the match.  The other suspect has not been identified.

Zahnd said, “Good police work by departments in two states put an end to this defendant’s crime spree.  I thank the departments for their joint effort to bring this felon to justice.”

The case was investigated by the Tracy and Leavenworth Police Departments, with the assistance of the Missouri State Highway Patrol.  It was prosecuted by Chris Seufert.
